  • Here is the short essay I wrote about this song for English Class if anyone cares: Poetry Analysis: The Dangers of Being on Stage In her original song, Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have- But I Have It, American Singer-Songwriter Lana Del Rey reveals the sharp contrast between her dark, inward emotions and the bright, dazzling public persona her audience knows of. She also hints at the fears she has that exposing herself will cause harm. Throughout the lines, she writes of her struggles with alcohol, severe depression, and all of the overwhelming attention she gets from being a celebrity. Del Rey develops the overarching theme using devices such as allusion, epistrophe, and metaphor in order to show the world her real face with a confessing tone. The initial stanza immediately provides the first instances of figurative language to display Del Rey’s deviation from the concept of flawlessness. Del Rey first makes an allusion to Slim Aarons, saying: “I was reading Slim Aarons” (line 1). Slim Aarons is a 1960s photographer who is most known for photographing- as he says- ‘attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places’, such as rich celebrities beside their summer mansions or picturesque women chatting by the poolside on a sunny day. Coupled with this reference, she utilizes visual imagery, describing: “smiling for miles in pink dresses and high heels on white yachts” (stanza 1, line 4). What one may easily abstract could be a bright, happy mood by the mentioning of bright, seemingly delightful colors like white and pink. Additionally, in that very line, she uses a consonance of the letter ‘s’, to create a smooth, elegant tone to complement the appealing scene. Clearly, the allusion, visual imagery, and consonance outline the idea of pretty appearances. She then places this background she has set up in juxtaposition with her internal self to show the severe contrast. That contrast is effectively the motif of this song. Line 5 is where she begins the comparison: But I'm not Baby, I'm not No, I'm not That, I'm not She uses epistrophe to add emphasis on the fact that her authentic self is not (one can assume she means) perfect and spotless like the imagery she described. When she starts some of these lines with ‘baby’ (directly addressing someone) or ‘no’ (an outward reply as if it was asked), it seems like she is apostrophically admitting these things to an audience (perhaps her fans and loved ones). She does this to dismiss the preconceived notions she is sure her spectators already have. Within the stanza, the difference between the opening graceful tone and the honest, confessional tone symbolizes the difference between the artist’s external guise and her genuine core (the chaos of this paradox gives one a peek into the struggle she copes with). Further, Del Rey is afraid of hurting and disappointing others around her by revealing her true feelings. She forms an implied metaphor to help convey this: Writing in blood on the walls 'Cause the ink in my pen don't work in my notepad Here, she wants others to see her for who she is and what she has to say instead of keeping the internal conflicts to herself. That is, big red letters on a wall are bound to be seen as opposed to small letters in a reserved notepad. It can also be observed that by mentioning blood, a word symbolic of gore and injury, she is suggesting that expressing all of this will cause her pain as well as hurt others. And this is where the chorus of the song expands the theme. She writes, “Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have.” This slight metaphor signifies that hope is like a weapon in her hands. Her hope (of being accepted as she is) is dangerous for her to have because it will hurt those around her who are accustomed to her facade; consequently, their expectations would crumble to pieces. As for her, the sword of hope could be double-edged and leave her without anyone to love her. Del Rey uses all of these techniques to make her first debut- barefaced and sincere. But essentially, she experiences stage fright in a sense, worrying that the onlookers will not fancy what they see. This song is her expression of that.
